How did the words “gallery,” “donation,” and “carer” come into play when you read the first part of the book and what do you think they mean?

I had no idea what to think during the first couple pages of the book. I thought the profession of "carer" was something like a nurse, but then that didn't make sense when the guardians continually called the students "special". This description then led me to believe that the students at ths secluded school were in some way mentally handicapped. Also during the early part of the book I thought the gallery was an actual place where there work was taken to be sold, so the students were like child laborers. I would soon realize that I was horribly mistaken.
When I first started reading the book I thought the word "carer" meant that the students where like taking carer of the disable but the further I read along i discovered that I was horribly mistaken. There further I studied the literary work I began to believe that all the children at this "place" where disable in some way; which didn't make sense to me because the children could perform task that I don't think mentally disabled children are capable of doing.
Although I was as confused as everyone with the terms during the first few pages, I got lucky and actually guessed what donor and carer were pretty much to a tee. I hit the whole purpose of the gallery on the head. Of course i had a few other whims, but I think the author did a good job of leading the reader to the reality of Kathy H.'s world without the reader feeling stupid.
